I learned today that what is commonly called the Confederate Flag was never in fact the flag of the Confederacy but is really a variant of the “Southern Cross” style battle flag. When and why did this particular variant get adopted into popular usage?

1939's GONE WITH THE WIND includes a scene of a Republican Carpetbagger loudly promising forty acres and a mule to freed blacks in implied exchange for their votes. What was the perception of black "party loyalty" at that time, given black voters flipped blue just in the mid 30s?

Did the general Italian public want to be on the side of the Axis during WWII? Was the government the driving force to team up with Germany? Every WWII movie I've ever seen seems to portray the Italians as welcoming the Allies as they moved into Italy.
